Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry Criteria

Introduction

In 2016, the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training, a global leader in continuing education and training standards, formed its Petroleum and Natural Gas (PNG) Advisory Board.

The IACET-PNG Advisory Board was founded to positively influence the PNG industry by engaging in the pursuit of excellence through the creation, presentation, transfer and application of knowledge in one of the world’s most important industries.  The IACET-PNG Advisory Board helps shape the future by bringing together and developing leaders in their fields to inspire the next generation and to advance ideas that benefit the industry.

The vision of the IACET-PNG Advisory is to provide educational leadership and knowledge transfer for a better industry. In keeping with that vision, the IACET-PNG Advisory Board has decided to use the globally recognized ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training and compliment it with the PNG Industry Criteria for Continuing Educaiton and Training.  While IACET’s standard is rigorous, the IACET PNG Criteria adds requirements that are designed to enhance the PNG industry standard and help organizations comply with other industry standards at the same time.

As thousands of new workers enter the PNG industry and knowledge is transferred from one generation to the next, the world’s leading PNG companies do not want to relearn past lessons through injury or death.  IACET’s Standard along with the IACET-PNG Industry Criteria will provide the industry with a comprehensive set of training standards, that if used properly, will increase knowledge transfer, save lives, and assist companies in reaching their potential.

How to Use the Criteria

Each of the categories in the criteria contains the core elements of the ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training. Below each set of elements is the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry Criteria which contains an extension of the element of the core standard or a completely new element unique. These new additions will be the basis for an IACET continuing education and training accreditation review process that will issue IACET accreditation along with a petroleum and natural gas endorsement for entities meeting the standard and specifications.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The PNG Industry Criteria compliments the ANSI/IACET 1-2018 Standard for Continuing Education and Training.  The PNG Industry Criteria was designed by petroleum and natural gas stakeholders from more than 20 different industry organizations.  The organizations that developed the Criteria are part of IACET's Petroleum and Natural Gas Advisory BoardYou can view a current roster of members here.

The petroleum and natural gas industry is one of largest and most dangerous in the world. Training is a vital component that keeps people safe and the organization productive.  Also, consider these facts that underscore the need for higher education, training and competency standards in PNG industry:

  • Lack of quality training is the #1 cause for non-productive time (NPT) - billions of dollars of loss per year. A mandatory requirement for SEMS (30CFR, 250); API Spec Q1, API Spec Q2, among others that service supply companies have to comply with.
  • Lack of quality training is the #2 cause for all incident investigations for upstream services.
  • Lack of quality training is the #1 concern when the industry recovers - 2014 to Present - 300,000 involved in industry RIF.
  • Improving training ranks in the top two opportunities for improving efficiencies and reducing costs.
  • Mandated by operators internationally.

The specification was designed after stakeholders identified the need for a more comprehsensive standard.  While several organizations have limited training standards, the IACET PNG Industry Criteria brings together a comprehensive instructional design and delivery standard that also assists PNG organizations in meeting other industry standards.
